New ISBT will be built at Bhalswa landfill site in Delhi, decision taken in the meeting of Transport Department.

The Delhi government plans to develop the Bhalswa landfill site and build a new Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) there to strengthen the public transport infrastructure in the capital. In this regard, an important meeting of the Transport Department was organized under the chairmanship of Transport Minister Pankaj Singh. In the meeting, it was decided to develop the Bhalswa site and build a new interstate bus terminal there.

According to the government, this new DTC inter-state bus terminal will be developed on about 20 acres of land being reclaimed from the landfill. With the construction of the proposed terminal, interstate bus connectivity in the northern part of Delhi is expected to improve and passengers will also get more facilities. Bhalswa is one of the three major landfill sites in Delhi. The other two major sites are Ghazipur Landfill and Okhla Landfill. Delhi government aims to completely reclaim the Bhalswa landfill by December 2026. At present, out of this site spread over about 70 acres, Delhi Municipal Corporation has been able to reclaim less than 10 acres of land so far.

There is a need for a new bus terminal

According to officials, before starting the project, its feasibility study will be conducted. On the basis of this report, further planning and form of the project will be decided.

There are three big ISBTs present in Delhi.

At present, there are three major bus terminals in Delhi, Kashmiri Gate ISBT, Anand Vihar ISBT and Sarai Kale Khan ISBT. In view of the increasing population and traffic pressure, the need for a new bus terminal is being felt in the capital.

Consideration is also given to building a new DTC depot near UER-2.

In the meeting, the Minister also gave instructions to explore the possibilities of building a new DTC depot near the UER-2 corridor. Apart from this, it has also been asked to upgrade the Burari bus depot, so that the growing fleet of electric buses can be operated in a better way.

Bhalswa is included in three big landfill sites

Bhalswa is one of the three major landfill sites in Delhi. The other two sites are Ghazipur Landfill and Okhla Landfill. The government aims to complete reclamation of Bhalswa landfill by December 2026.

7,500 electric buses by 2026

According to the government, more than 4,000 electric buses are currently running in Delhi and 200 new buses will be added this month. The government aims to increase the number of electric buses to 7,500 by the end of 2026. According to the Transport Department, EV charging infrastructure has already been created in 44 bus depots of the city. At the same time, under Phase-1 and Phase-2 of PM e-Drive, charging network is being developed in 36 more depots, which is expected to give further impetus to the expansion of electric buses.
