  • A new ‘twist’ in IPL 2026!
  • Now the ball will be changed after 10 overs
  • Who will benefit from this new rule, batsman or bowler?

IPL New Rules 2026: One of the richest cricket leagues in the world IPL (IPL 2026) The new season starts from March 28. Even before the two teams face each other in the field BCCI A major and very interesting change has been made to the rules of the game. Especially in the second innings of the match, this rule about changing the ball after 10 overs can change the outcome of the match. Let’s understand in detail what exactly this new rule is and how it will affect the game.

What is the rule?

During a match, the batsman hits so hard that the ball goes out of the stadium or gets stuck in a place from where it cannot be retrieved. BCCI has given clear guidelines on changing the ball in such situations.

  • Umpire will make final decision: If the ball is lost or unplayable, the umpire will decide to replace it.
  • A ball with uniform wear: As a rule, the ball to be replaced must be as old or worn as the previous ball.
  • Transparency: After changing the ball, the umpire will give full information to the batsmen, the captain of the bowling team and the fielders.

The ‘master plan’ of 10 overs in the second innings

The most talked about IPL this time is the ‘second innings ball change’ rule. It is expected that this rule will create a new thrill in the match.

  • For Second Innings Only: This rule will be applicable only for the team bowling in the second innings of the match.
  • Limit of 10 overs: The bowling team can request the umpires to change the ball at any time after the completion of 10 overs. However, this opportunity will come only once in the entire innings.
  • Time Limit: This rule will be applicable only for night matches (starting at 07.30 pm). The ball cannot be changed in the match which starts at 03.30 PM.
  • No change in the middle of the over: The ball will be replaced only after the end of the over. Ball substitution is not allowed in the current over.

What has changed this year compared to last year?

Last season also there was a provision to change the ball if it got wet due to dew. But this year BCCI has put a ‘twist’ in it which can be beneficial for the bowlers. As per this year’s rules, if the bowling team calls for a change of ball after 10 overs, the ball must be changed whether there is dew on the ground or not. Dew in night matches makes the ball wet and soft, which loosens the grip of the bowlers and makes batting easier. To avoid this injustice, BCCI has decided to provide a dry and equally worn ball after 10 overs.

Who will benefit?

With the introduction of this rule, spinners and fast bowlers in the death overs are likely to get more help. Because after 10 overs a new or dry ball will give them a better grip and reverse swing or turn will be easier.
