Deadly attack on prisoner in Delhi’s Mandoli Jail, multiple stab wounds for not paying extortion money; Questions raised on security arrangements

Delhi’s Mandoli Jail has once again come under the scanner regarding security arrangements. A case of fatal attack on 40 year old undertrial prisoner Javed alias Tony has come to light in the jail premises located in Harsh Vihar police station area. It is alleged that he was stabbed several times on his waist with a sharp weapon inside the jail, due to which he was seriously injured. After the incident, the jail administration immediately admitted the injured prisoner to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, where his treatment is going on.

According to the police, this incident happened late on Wednesday night. Afroza, wife of the injured prisoner, said that she had gone to Mandoli jail to meet her husband on Wednesday morning and at that time Javed was completely healthy. But late in the night the jail administration called and informed him about the attack. On reaching the hospital, she found her husband in a critical condition.

Extortion charges inside jail

Injured Javed has alleged that illegal extortion of Rs 10 to 15 thousand was being demanded from him inside the jail. He was continuously receiving death threats if he did not pay the amount. Javed claims that even before this, attempts were made to attack him with sharp weapons several times, but he escaped every time.

Brother-in-law was also murdered a month ago

Javed’s brother Gulshan told that Javed is lodged in Mandoli jail for the last seven months on charges of selling drugs. He also claimed that his brother-in-law Amjad alias Rakal was attacked and killed with a sharp weapon on March 1. The family members have alleged that a prisoner named Zakir, who was in jail, had attacked Javed. Besides, he has also made serious allegations against some employees of the jail administration of being involved in extortion.

Police and jail administration engaged in investigation

After the incident, the police and jail administration have started investigating the matter. The security arrangements inside the jail, increasing violence among the prisoners and allegations of illegal extortion have once again raised serious questions on the functioning of the jail administration.
