A proud moment for Indian cinema! Rani Mukherjee has been awarded an honorary ‘Doctor of Letters’ degree by La Trobe University in Australia
Rani Mukharjee: Veteran actress of Indian cinema Rani Mukherjee (Rani Mukharjee) has been conferred yet another prestigious international honor recognizing her contribution to social service along with her distinguished acting career. She will be awarded the honorary degree of ‘Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.)’ by La Trobe University in Australia.
The award will be held during the 2026 Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) on 14 August 2026 at Federation Square in Melbourne. Rani Mukherjee is being conferred with this honor in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the Indian film industry for nearly three decades and her work for the welfare of women, children and the underprivileged sections of the society.
The award, which will be presented at IFFM 2026 from August 13 to 23, recognizes Rani Mukerji’s long and successful film career as well as her social commitment. Not only did she deliver impressive performances in films like ‘Black’, ‘No One Killed Jessica’, ‘Hiccup’, the ‘Mardaani’ franchise and ‘Mrs Chatterjee vs. Norway’, she also effectively brought up important issues such as women’s rights, gender equality, disability inclusion and social change in mainstream films.
Apart from films, Rani Mukerji has also been an active participant in various humanitarian initiatives related to children’s education, health and community development. Therefore, along with acting, his social work is also being honored at the global level.

Expressing her happiness at the honour, Rani Mukherjee said, “Cinema has been the greatest teacher of my life. Stories have the power to evoke emotions and bring about positive change. I dedicate this honor to my fans in India and around the world.”
John Brumby, Chancellor of La Trobe University praised Rani Mukherjee’s work and said that her contribution is not limited to entertainment but also creates dialogue in society on important issues like social justice, equality and inclusiveness.
Director of Indian Film Festival of Melbourne Mitu Bhowmik Lang said that this honor is a very proud moment for Indian film industry and IFFM.
