Russian woman’s ‘desi’ road crossing tutorial goes viral in Jaipur

A funny video of Russian content creator Vera Prokofieva teaching her friend a special Indian way to cross a busy road has gone viral on social media. In this clip, filmed in front of Jaipur’s famous Hawa Mahal in August 2025, Prokofieva confidently demonstrates the hand gesture technique to stop oncoming traffic.

“I will teach you how to cross the road,” she says, and waves her palm towards the vehicles as she guides her friend across the road. After reaching the other side safely, she happily says, “Mission accomplished! Successfully!” The video, posted on Instagram (@vera__india) with the caption “The first rule of survival in India”, quickly garnered millions of views and shares.

People started making funny and relatable comments on the internet. Some of the comments were: “You hacked Jaipur traffic like a pro!” And “I’m from Jaipur too, I can totally relate – it works.” Some people joked that the gesture was an “Iron Man hand” or joked that foreigners who become adept at it should get an Aadhaar card. While many laughed, some warned against doing this on the highway, stressing the potential dangers.

Although the video is entertaining, it shows India’s chaotic traffic and lack of strict rules for pedestrians. Experts remind visitors to prioritize safety: use zebra crossings, overbridges or signals; Wait for vehicles to come to a complete stop; Make eye contact with drivers; And avoid distractions like phones. Wearing reflective clothing at night and early road safety education for children are also important.

Prokofieva’s playful approach showcases the adaptability of foreigners living in India, while also opening up a conversation on improving urban traffic management for safer roads.
