A step towards stronger energy security partnership, America welcomes India’s peace bill
New Delhi:The United States has openly welcomed the ‘Peace Bill 2025’ passed by India. America has described this as a step to advance the strong energy security partnership and peaceful civil nuclear cooperation between India and America. The US Embassy in India, reacting on social media platform X, said that the US is keen on joint innovation, research and development with India in the energy sector.
New momentum to India-US energy cooperation
The US Embassy statement said that the ‘Peace Bill’ will strengthen energy security between the two countries and will give a new direction to cooperation in the civil nuclear sector. America has long been in favor of promoting clean and sustainable energy partnership with India, and this bill is considered a big step in that direction.
What is Peace Bill 2025?
The full name of ‘Peace Bill 2025’ is the Sustainable Exploitation and Development of Nuclear Energy for India’s Transformation Bill. This bill has recently been passed by the Parliament. Its objective is to modernize the legal and policy framework of India’s nuclear energy sector and prepare it for future needs.
Nuclear sector will open for private companies
Till now, operation of nuclear power plants in India was mainly limited to public sector companies, although joint ventures were allowed in some cases. But after the implementation of the Peace Bill, the way will be cleared for private companies to enter this sector. After obtaining a license under the Bill, any eligible company or joint venture will be able to acquire the right to construct, own, operate and even decommission a nuclear reactor or power plant.
Big change in old laws
This bill proposes to repeal the Atomic Energy Act of 1962 and the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act (CLND Act) of 2010. The Government believes that these old laws were not in line with current technical and investment needs, creating barriers to private investment and global cooperation.
Regulatory system will be strengthened
The Peace Bill gives statutory status to the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), which will make the regulatory system more transparent and strong. The government claims that there will be no compromise on safety standards and all activities will be under strict regulatory control.
Steps towards the goal of 2047
The Indian government has set a target of achieving 100 gigawatt nuclear power capacity by 2047. The peace bill is being considered a part of this long-term strategy. Nuclear energy is being considered as a source playing an important role in clean energy transition, which will help in reducing carbon emissions.
Who can apply?
According to the bill, central government departments, government companies, institutions established or controlled by the government, private companies, joint ventures or other eligible persons notified by the central government can apply for the license.
India’s new identity on the global stage
It is clear from the positive response of America that the Peace Bill will not only bring changes in India’s internal energy policy, but will also help in establishing India as a reliable and modern nuclear energy partner at the global level.
