VB-G RAM G bill passed in Rajya Sabha at midnight, opposition MPs sitting in Parliament complex in protest
The Vikas Bharat-Guarantee for Employment and Livelihood Mission (Rural) i.e. VB-G RAM G Bill, 2025 was also passed by the Rajya Sabha after midnight. Earlier this bill had been passed by the Lok Sabha and now it will be sent for the President’s approval. This new law will replace the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA), under which rural families will now get 125 days of wage employment guarantee annually, whereas earlier this limit was 100 days.
Before the bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha, the opposition parties strongly opposed it and demanded to send it to the Select Committee. After the demand was rejected, the opposition MPs walked out of the House and sat on strike in the Parliament complex at midnight. The discussion on this bill continued in the Rajya Sabha till late Thursday night, after which it was passed by voice vote on Friday. Earlier, this bill was debated for about 14 hours in the Lok Sabha, where Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan answered the opposition’s questions.
