Major accident in THDC project of Uttarakhand: Trains collide in tunnel, 60 workers injured
A major accident took place on Tuesday night in the under-construction THDC Hydroelectric Project in Pipalkoti area of Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Two loco trains collided inside the tunnel, in which at least 60 workers were injured. The incident occurred around 8.30 pm during shift change, when workers were being taken into the tunnel about 4.5 kilometers inside. After the collision, there was chaos on the spot and the work had to be stopped immediately.
According to the information, a loco train carrying laborers collided with another loco standing on the same track, due to which two coaches derailed. As soon as information about the accident was received, the district administration and Chamoli police reached the spot, while District Magistrate Gaurav Kumar and Superintendent of Police Surjit Singh Panwar reached Gopeshwar District Hospital. The administration said that the condition of all the injured workers is stable, however this incident has raised serious questions on the security arrangements in the project. An inquiry into the cause of the accident has been ordered and a detailed investigation is underway.
