AAP MP Sanjay Singh’s allegation: Attack against central government over dismissal of 112 prepaid taxi employees

New Delhi, 25 February 2026 Senior Aam Aadmi Party leader and MP Sanjay Singh has made a scathing attack on the BJP central government for firing 112 employees associated with the prepaid taxi scheme running in Delhi. He said that these employees had worked hard for the last 40 years to make the prepaid taxi scheme successful and profitable. Now suddenly they have been thrown out. The government will soon fire the remaining 38 employees. Where will these people go now at this age? He demanded from the Central Government that all the employees should be taken back and accommodated in its new scheme.

Concept and purpose of prepaid taxi

While addressing a press conference at AAP headquarters on Wednesday, Sanjay Singh said that Delhi Police had come out with the concept of prepaid taxi about 40 years ago in 1986. The intention behind this was to ensure that the passengers could be safely transported to their homes. There was a system of police surveillance and there were prepaid taxi booths for the passengers who went through prepaid taxis. There was complete monitoring of whether the passengers of prepaid taxi were reaching safely or not and at the same time Delhi Police used to charge service charge from the passengers for its service. That service charge was so substantial that through that service charge, Delhi Police used to pay all the salaries and maintenance of the employees driving this prepaid taxi.

Hard work and contribution of employees in the scheme

Sanjay Singh further said that due to the tireless hard work of about 150 employees who were given a salary of Rs 850 per day, who were the milestones of this scheme and who worked day and night to make the concept of prepaid taxi successful, there was an FD of Rs 10 crore in this prepaid taxi scheme. That means it was a profit plan. Due to the hard work of those people day and night, there was a fixed deposit of Rs 10 crore. In this, suddenly it occurred to Delhi Police and Home Minister that they have to bring this entire scheme in a different form. They want to operate the thousands of taxis that were running under this prepaid taxi scheme in their own way through an app.

Dismissal of employees and worries about the future

Sanjay Singh said that about 112 employees who were the milestones in running this scheme, who were the foundation stones, on whose foundation this prepaid taxi scheme was built, have been thrown out. The remaining 38 people will also be evacuated within a few days. Their future is also not secure.

demand from central government

Sanjay Singh demanded from the Union Home Minister and the Commissioner of Delhi Police that the work of evicting those people who strengthened this prepaid taxi by working hard day and night by providing their services for 40 years, should not be done. Their families should not be brought to the brink of starvation. Where will they go today at the age of 60, 50 and 55? This decision has been taken to push them into a dark well, this decision should be withdrawn. Whatever scheme the government wants to run, under the same scheme all these 150 employees should be kept as they were before. DoPT had also given instructions to regularize them during 1993-96.

voice of employees

During this, an employee said that letters were written to every competent authority for the last several years but no one listened. Today MP Sanjay Singh has given this platform. On one hand, Delhi Police says that it is being run on no-loss-no-profit basis, on the other hand, on the pretext of revenue generation, Co-operative Taxi is removing us by giving us a termination letter from 22nd February. For the last 40 years we have been getting a salary of Rs 25,000 to Rs 26,000 and get paid Rs 843 per day. Senior officers should solve this problem.

Shehnaz’s reaction

At the same time, employee Shahnaz said that she works as a clerk at a prepaid counter and many of her colleagues earn their living from this. During the training of Co-operative Taxi, it was assured that we will not be fired, but will work together through digitalization by giving us tabs and WiFi. But we were thrown out overnight without any notice. We are daily wage earners, we do not get any pension or other benefits. We also worked during Corona, in which two of our colleagues lost their lives due to infection, but their families were not given any financial assistance or jobs. Bharat Taxi claimed to work together, but we were left out. We want justice and we want to be taken back to jobs.

Long fight and demand for justice

Another employee said that this fight has been going on since 1986. The Police Commissioner had received orders twice from the High Court and the Supreme Court to classify them and give them ‘equal pay for equal work’, but was denied that too. Even when earlier it was said that there was no budget, the expenses were covered by our source of income. On what basis has the budget of Rs 300 crores been released now?
