AAP objects to changing the name of Sarai Kale Khan to Birsa Munda Chowk, says – ask whom to change the name
Union Urban Development Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Friday announced that Sarai Kale Khan Chowk, located on Delhi's Ring Road, has been renamed as Bhagwan Birsa Munda Chowk. Delhi's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has expressed displeasure and raised questions over the name change. However, the decision of the central government was welcomed by Arvind Kejriwal in a press conference on Friday.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah renamed the Sarai Kale Khan intersection as “Bhagwan Birsa Munda Chowk” after unveiling the statue of the great tribal leader Birsa Munda on his 150th birth anniversary. Union Urban Development Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced the renaming of the intersection, prompting the AAP government to question whether proper procedure was followed.
However, AAP sources also wanted to find out whether the proposal to rename the Chowk was approved by any road naming authority (which regulates the process) or not.

Central government officials rejected the AAP government's version, saying the name “Sarai Kale Khan” was not present in any government records related to the capital.
Delhi government officials said that the State Naming Authority has the authority to name any place, which is not currently in the capital as it is yet to be constituted.
An official associated with the Delhi government asked, “At present, there is no road naming authority in Delhi, so where did the permission to change the name of Sarai Kale Khan Chowk to Bhagwan Birsa Munda Chowk come from? This road comes under PWD of Delhi Government. Where is the order regarding changing the name?”
The central government official said, “Sarai Kale Khan is the name of this area and ISBT will still be known by this name. There was no mention of Sarai Kale Khan in the government records. “Changing the name of the intersection is the first of its kind when it comes to representation of tribal identity in the capital.”
