Abhishek Sharma breaks world record for fastest 100 T20I sixes despite rain-hit England clash
The opening T20I match between India and England in Chester-le-Street may have fizzled out without a result, but not for Abhishek Sharma. India had put on a competitive total of 189/7 in reply to England’s first innings, but the game was abandoned due to rain, which prevented England from chasing down the target. However, the evening didn’t leave fans empty-handed in terms of surprises, as one particular Indian batter made history on the virtual cricket fields.
Abhishek Sharma became the fastest T20I batsman in men’s cricket to reach 100 sixes. The left-hander achieved the feat in a stunning 785 deliveries, breaking the previous record held by West Indies’ Evin Lewis, who took 789 balls to hit 100 sixes. Sharma reached the mark during his fearful innings at number three, hitting two sixes in a row.
A new king of power-hitting: Abhishek Sharma
Since making his international debut in 2024, Abhishek has blossomed into one of the most destructive batters in the world.
The manner in which he has scored has been fearless, and his ability to score against pace and spin has made him a vital asset in limited-overs cricket for India. However, his latest achievement underlines his incredible strike rate as a T20 batsman.
At over 1,450 runs for the men’s game in T20Is, he has a strike rate of more than 190, the highest among batters with more than 1,000 runs in men’s T20Is. In every innings, he continues to cement his reputation as one of the most fearful hitters in the game.
The fastest to 100 T20I sixes
Abhishek now tops an elite list featuring some of the biggest hitters in modern cricket.
1. Abhishek Sharma (India) – 785 balls
The Indian opener now holds the world record after rewriting history against England.
2. Evin Lewis (West Indies) – 789 balls
The Caribbean opener’s explosive batting had previously set the benchmark before Abhishek surpassed it.
3. Finn Allen (New Zealand) – 871 balls
Known for his fearless powerplay batting, Allen reached the milestone in fewer than 900 deliveries.
4. Tim David (Australia) – 931 balls
The Australian finisher achieved the feat despite batting predominantly in the middle order.
5. Colin Munro (New Zealand) – 963 balls
One of the pioneers of aggressive T20 opening batting, Munro completes the top five.
Another Indian record falls
Abhishek Sharma’s record-breaking night saw the left-hander equal the fastest T20I fifty by an Indian batsman in England. He reached his half-century in only 20 deliveries.
This improved KL Rahul’s own previous best of 27 balls in a tense and dramatic T20I against England in Manchester in 2018.
The exciting young batsman then accelerated to post a crucial score after early wickets, helping set a challenging target before rain wiped out any chance of a result.
An overcast day’s play failed to dampen Abhishek’s spirits as he made sure that the first T20I between the two cricketing powerhouses would go down in history.
The batter not only surpassed two legendary Indian records but also improved his own reputation as one of the most exciting power-hitters in the T20I circuit.
