“Abhishek Sharma needs as many balls for a fifty as I did to get off the mark”: Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar spoke to Abhishek Sharma after the young batter scored 84 runs off 35 balls during the first T20I between India and New Zealand in Nagpur on Wednesday, January 22. The southpaw was named the Player of the Match for his match-winning knock, laced with eight sixes and five boundaries. His effort took the team’s score to 238/7 in 20 overs and played a key role in India’s 48-run win over the Kiwis.
Abhishek was speaking to the broadcasting channel in the presence of the legendary Gavaskar. He mentioned that Abhishek reached his fifty in the same number of balls that he used to take to score his first run during his career.
“Abhishek Sharma needs as many balls for a fifty as I did to get off the mark. There is a big difference,” Gavaskar said.
Abhishek completed his fifty in 22 balls, and he said that he was trying to play his natural game and backed his instincts.
“We had a plan and are following it. You have to carry intent, if you want to score runs at a strike rate of 200. All the teams prepare a plan for me. It is about my preparation, and I am going to back my instinct. My role is not high-risk, and I wouldn’t say this is my comfort zone.
“I have been practising to hit big sixes. I am a batter who believes in timing rather than range hitting. I watched the ball and used the conditions. I plan in net session. If you watch your videos, you know about the line and length bowlers are bowling to you,” Abhishek said.
India are 1-0 head and will face New Zealand in the second T20I in Raipur on Friday, January 23.
