Indian pace sensation Mohammed Shami’s comeback to international cricket go further delayed as he was not picked in the Indian playing XI for the first T20I against England at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Shami was expected to return to Indian team after 14 months. However, after Suryakumar Yadav announced at the toss about Shami being excluded from the playing XI, it gave rise to a lot of speculations about his fitness since he is in India’s Champions Trophy 2025 squad as well.

After the match, Abhishek, who was the star of the evening, stated that the veteran pacer did not get taken because of the conditions that were there in the Eden Gardens.

I feel it’s the decision of the team management and they thought it’s a better option keeping in mind of these conditions,” Abhishek said at the post-match press conference.

Shami appeared for the India for the last time in the 2023 ODI World Cup final against Australia in Ahmedabad. He came out as the highest wicket-taker, taking 24 wickets in 7 outings.

Even after his amazing performance, Shami batted through a heel issue, that required injections to manage the pain. This injury eventually made surgery necessary on his Achilles tendon that forced him out of action since November 2023.
