New Delhi:- Achyranthes aspera, which is known by many names like Chirchira, Apamarg, Adhoghanta, Adhvashalya, Aghmargav, Apang, Safed Aghedo, Anghadi, Andhedi, Agheda, Uttarani, Kadaladi, Katlati. Apamarga is an important and easily available Ayurvedic herb mentioned in the Vedic literature. Apamarga is botanically known as Achyranthes aspera Linn and in English it is called Prickly Chaff Flower. It is an erect, many-branched, spreading plant that lives for many years.

This plant can grow up to 6 to 7 feet tall, commonly known as chaff flower, prickly chaff flower, devil's horsewhip. The plant and all its parts like roots, seeds, leaves, flowers and fruits are used for medicinal purposes. It is mainly found in tropical Asian, African, hot regions. It is also found in Australia and America, Ceylon, Balochistan. In India it mainly grows like a weed on the roadside. Apamarga is widely used in Ayurveda as an anti-inflammatory agent. It has important medicinal properties and is used in Indian folklore in the treatment of cough, bronchitis and arthritis, malarial fever, dysentery, asthma, hypertension and diabetes.

Panacea for dozens of diseases

In the Atharvaveda, Apamarga is considered the god of all plants growing on earth. It removes infertility, physical weakness and gives life. Apamarga eliminates diseases from the body. According to Ayurveda, it is best for Shiro Virechana and is also useful in ear diseases, worm infection, Pandu and many other diseases. It balances Kapha and Vata doshas. Achyranthes aspera plant has great importance in Ayurvedic. Even Ayurvedic texts have an entire chapter named after this plant, “Apamarga Tanduliya”, which explains the many ways in which it can be used to treat the human body. It is considered to be a very effective herb for detoxification of the body both internally and externally. Apamarga plant and seeds are rich in carbohydrates, proteins and some components like flavonoids, tannins, saponins that help in maintaining the overall health of a person.

According to Ayurveda, taking Achyranthes aspera powder with honey improves digestion due to its appetite enhancing and digestive properties. Regular consumption of a handful of Apamarga seeds helps in controlling weight by reducing the accumulation of excess fat thereby reducing body weight. Applying the juice of Achyranthes aspera leaves directly to the affected area can help in wound healing due to its astringent and anti-inflammatory properties. It can also be used to provide relief from ulcers due to its anti-ulcer and gastroprotective activity.

Treatment of piles with the medicinal properties of Apamarga.

Grind 6 leaves of Apamarg and 5 pieces of black pepper with water. Filtering it and consuming it in the morning and evening provides relief in piles. This stops bleeding. Grind the seeds of Apamarg and make a fine powder. Mix equal quantity of sugar candy in it. Consume 3-6 grams of it with water in the morning and evening. This is beneficial in piles. Grind and filter 10-20 grams of Apamarg root powder with rice washer. Mixing two spoons of honey in it and drinking it provides relief in the disease of bloody piles caused due to pittaja or kaphaja disorders.

Beneficial in kidney disease
Consumption of Apamarg: Grind 5-10 grams of fresh root of Apamarg in water. Dissolving it and drinking it is very beneficial in the disease of stones. This medicine breaks the kidney stones into pieces and removes them from the body. This medicine works very well for kidney pain.
