New Delhi. Actor Vijay Thalapathy led political party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam extended wishes for Thai Pongal and Tamil New Year. A new debate has erupted on the cultural and political significance of linking Pongal with the Tamil New Year. In a message shared on social media, TVK President Vijay said that on the auspicious festival of Thai Pongal, the lives of Tamils across the world be filled with love and peace. May their health and prosperity also remain intact. Wishing everyone a very happy Pongal and Tamil New Year. This greeting is gaining attention because, traditionally, the Tamil New Year is not celebrated during Thai Pongal in January, but in the Tamil month of Chithirai in mid-April.

In 2008, the DMK government led by late Chief Minister M Karunanidhi officially declared Thai Pongal as the Tamil New Year, citing references from ancient Tamil literature and historical sources. Although other governments have again adopted Chithirai as the New Year, the Pongal-based New Year is still associated with Dravidian ideology and reformist politics. TVK General Secretary, Policy and Publicity Arunraj also shared a strong message on X, linking Pongal to political change. He wrote that the old system should end and a new system should come. Describing Pongal as a symbol of leaving the old and embracing the new. He linked this festival to today’s politics and said that Tamil Nadu is also moving towards a new political era. He paid tribute to the farmers and said that Pongal honors those who trust the soil and their hard work. TVK General Secretary Adhav Arjun said that the festival of Pongal reflects Tamil cultural pride, peaceful co-existence and innovation. He said that Pongal is a unique festival through which we Tamil people remember our cultural pride and our peaceful, harmonious way of life. Leaving behind old things, we adopt new light according to the changing times.”
