Software major Adobe has announced a significant update to Firefly, its AI-powered video generation app, adding prompt-based video editing tools and expanding support for third-party image and video models. The changes mark a shift in how creators can work with AI-generated video, moving Firefly beyond simple generation toward more precise, flexible editing.
Until now, Firefly has only allowed users to generate videos from text prompts. Any change, even a minor one, required recreating the entire clip from scratch. With the new update, Firefly introduces a dedicated video editor that lets users refine existing clips using text instructions. Creators can now adjust elements such as colours, lighting, camera angles, and composition without starting over.
A new timeline view has also been added, allowing users to fine-tune frames, audio, and other visual characteristics with greater control.
Adobe first revealed the video editor in a private beta in October, and the feature is now rolling out to all users.
The company says the editor supports highly specific instructions when used with Runway’s Aleph model. Users can issue commands such as changing the sky to an overcast look, lowering contrast, or slightly zooming in on a subject, and Firefly will apply those edits directly to the video.
Adobe’s own Firefly Video model is also gaining new capabilities. Users can first upload a starting frame along with a reference video that demonstrates a particular camera movement, and then ask Firefly to recreate that camera motion in their own clip. This opens the door to more consistent visual storytelling and easier replication of complex camera work.

Alongside editing improvements, Adobe is expanding Firefly’s model ecosystem. Support for Topaz Labs’ Astra model allows users to upscale videos to 1080p or 4K, addressing one of the most common post-production needs. Black Forest Labs’ FLUX.2 image generation model is also being added to Firefly, bringing another option for high-quality image creation. Adobe has said that FLUX.2 will soon be available across Firefly platforms, with Adobe Express users gaining access from January.
The update arrives as competition in AI image and video generation intensifies. To encourage wider adoption, Adobe announced that subscribers on Firefly Pro, Firefly Premium, and higher-credit plans will receive unlimited generations from all image models and the Adobe Firefly Video model within the Firefly app until January 15.
The company introduced new subscription tiers in February, launched a redesigned Firefly web app, expanded to mobile, and steadily added third-party model support. With prompt-based video editing and a broader model lineup, Adobe is positioning Firefly as a more complete creative platform rather than just a generation tool.
