Grenier believes criticism aimed at his character in the original movie might explain why he did not receive a call to return. The actor played Nate Cooper, the boyfriend of Andy Sachs, portrayed by Anne Hathaway. Over time, many fans began criticizing Nate for being unsupportive of Andy’s demanding fashion career.
Speaking in an interview, Grenier admitted he felt disappointed about missing out on The Devil Wears Prada 2. However, he said he understands the fan response to the character. “We’re all fans of the movie, whether or not we’re in it,” he said. “Obviously, it was a disappointment that I didn’t get the call to be in the sequel, but I also understand there’s some backlash with Nate, the character (via Page Six).”
The 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada follows Andy Sachs as she tries to juggle her personal life and a demanding job in the fashion world. She works for the powerful editor Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl Streep, at Runway magazine. As Andy throws more time and energy into her career, tension grows between her and her boyfriend, Nate Cooper. The pressure eventually leads to their breakup, though the two share a brief reconciliation near the end of the story.
Adrian Grenier, in a separate interview, had said he understood why fans criticized Nate. Looking back, he admitted he initially missed some of the deeper layers in the character. Over time, especially after hearing fan discussions online, he realized Nate could come across as selfish and somewhat immature. “And in many ways, he’s very selfish and self-involved; it was all about him. He wasn’t extending himself to support Andy in her career,” Grenier said (via EW).
The sequel will still bring back several familiar faces. Hathaway returns as Andy alongside Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci, while Streep once again plays Miranda Priestly.
