As the fourth powerful platform of the Project 17A class, Taragiri is not just a ship, she is a 6,670 tonne living example of the spirit of Make in India and the excellent engineering capabilities of our indigenous shipyards. The frigate, built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited of Mumbai, is a huge leap forward over previous designs. Its shape is more compact and its radar cross-section is much lower, due to which it can attack the enemy in complete stealth. More than 75 percent indigenous material has been used in it. The ship reflects the maturity of our domestic industrial ecosystem, which now comprises over 200 micro, small and medium enterprises. These enterprises are contributing to the self-reliance initiatives of the Government of India and providing employment to thousands of Indians. Taragiri, powered by combined diesel or gas propulsion plants, is designed for high speed-long range versatility and a wide range of maritime operations. The ship is equipped with the world’s best weapons, including supersonic ‘surface-to-surface missiles’, medium-range surface-to-air missiles and special weapons to fight submarines. All these systems are interconnected through a state-of-the-art ‘Combat Management System’, which allows the ship’s crew to respond to any threat in the blink of an eye with complete precision. Apart from serving as a high-seas stealth hunter, Taragiri is also designed to handle the complexities of modern diplomacy and humanitarian crises.
