After all, why does the first Holi take place in the city of Mahakal?

Every festival first starts in the court of Lord Mahakal, who is called the king of Ujjain. According to tradition, Holi of the year 2026 will also start from the Mahakal temple complex on March 2. Here during the evening aarti, devotees and priests will play Holi with herbal gulal and after this Holika Dahan will be done at dusk.

This time’s Holi is a little special and different because the first lunar eclipse of the year is falling on March 3. Due to this astronomical event, there has been a change in the arrangements of the temple and the timing of the aarti of the Lord. Keeping in view the Sutak period of the eclipse and the process of purification, the administration has set new rules for the people.

Holika Dahan on 2 March

  • It is believed that until the Holi fire is lit in the court of Mahakal, Holika Dahan does not happen anywhere else in the entire country. People have deep faith behind this. Also, he is considered the master of the entire creation. Therefore, any auspicious work or happiness is first started in his name.
  • In the evening aarti, flower juice and herbal gulal will be offered first to Baba Mahakal. Besides, as per tradition, a sugar garland will also be offered to him.
  • On the next day of Holika Dahan, i.e. on March 3, in the morning Bhasma Aarti, Baba will be divinely adorned with fresh ashes and gulal.

Lunar eclipse and aarti time

According to astrological calculations, there will be a lunar eclipse of about 14 minutes from 6:32 to 6:46 pm on the day of Phalgun Purnima on March 3, 2026. This will affect the daily routine of the temple in this way. Due to the Sutak of the eclipse, only sugar will be offered to God in the morning Bhog Aarti.
