After the Bangladesh elections, the real test of confidence in the new government begins now.
Votes were cast in Bangladesh after a long wait. After the student movement the old power went. Interim government came. Then preparations for the elections began. People stood in line and voted. Voting took place till late night in many places. The atmosphere was not as tense as before. But questions are still alive in the minds of people. Is this the same democracy that was demanded?
Why the absence of Awami League?
The biggest thing about this election was the distance of Awami League. Sheikh Hasina’s party was not in the field. This decision was not taken voluntarily. The situation became such that the party was out of the elections. Awami League has been an important face of the country’s politics since independence. In such a situation, his absence became a topic of discussion. Many people consider this to be an incomplete picture of democracy.
Will the results decide the direction?
These elections are being considered the key to the future. What will be the policy of the new government? Especially how will the relations be with India. It will all depend on the results. A referendum has also been taken on the July Charter. This will decide the new direction of the system. The voting percentage was around fifty. People’s participation has definitely given indications.
How serious is the news of violence?
The situation remained largely calm during voting. Still, clashes took place at some places. At one place the news of death of a BNP leader came. Incidents against minorities raised concerns. Elections are not just about casting votes. Security and trust are also important. If there is an atmosphere of fear then democracy will weaken.
Will questions be raised on the results?
Awami League has raised questions on the election process. Mohammad Yunus, head of the interim government, called it a success. The real test will start after the results. BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami are the main contenders. BNP leader Tariq Rehman has demanded a fair count. If there is a delay then speculation will increase. The country needs clear and timely results.
What is the first responsibility of the new government?
Whoever comes to power will have to win the trust of the people. Unemployment is a big problem. People are troubled by inflation. The interim government could not satisfy the common people. Now hope is from the new government. The promises will have to be implemented on the ground. Just making statements will not work. The public is more aware now. The end of the elections is not the end of the story. This is the beginning. The new government will have to take the opposition along.
Security of minorities has to be ensured. We will have to maintain balanced relations with neighboring countries. The most important thing is transparency. If decisions are clear then trust will be built. This is the real test for Bangladesh.
