It has been told that on Thursday evening, Deva had entered Telangana from Chhattisgarh along with some of his companions. After this, everyone was brought to Hyderabad on Friday, where they formally surrendered. Sources say that along with Deva, about 15 to 17 Maoist cadres have also laid down their arms.

Important role in Maoist organization

45-year-old Barse Deva was in charge of Battalion No. 1, considered the most important fighting unit of the Maoist organization. Apart from this, he was also holding the responsibility as Area Zonal Committee Member (AZCM) from the year 2021. According to security agencies, Battalion No. 1 was considered the last organized military force of the Maoists, which played a leading role in planning and executing major attacks.

close to Hidamba

Deva has been a close associate of notorious Maoist leader Madvi Hidma. Hidma was recently killed in an encounter in the Maredumilli forests of Andhra Pradesh. After that, Deva took the important responsibility of monitoring armed operations as the head of the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA). Both were residents of Purvarti village in Sukma district, which was considered a stronghold of Maoists for a long time.

Involved in major attacks

According to security agencies, Deva and Hidma had together planned several major and bloody attacks. These include the attack on the Congress convoy in Darbha Valley on 25 May 2013, in which 27 people lost their lives. Apart from this, 22 security personnel were martyred in the attack on Sukma-Bijapur border in April 2021. These incidents had made Maoist violence a topic of discussion at the national level.

Deep hold on weapons and networks

Officials said that Deva played an important role in arms procurement, logistics management, attack strategy and coordination of armed forces. After his surrender, the police recovered a light machine gun (LMG) from him. Besides, many members of his military team have also laid down their arms.

decisive blow to the organization

Intelligence agencies believe that Battalion No. 1, which once had around 130 armed cadres, had already become weak due to continuous security operations. Now after the surrender of Deva, its remaining members may also come forward soon. Officials say that Hidma’s death and Deva’s surrender have broken the back of PLGA and deeply affected the organized violent capability of the Maoist organization.
