Premature Being born That baby was experiencing many physical problems. This baby was successfully treated at the Motherhood Hospital in Lullanagar, Pune and after the tireless efforts of the doctors, the baby’s fight against death was finally successful. The NICU transport team known as ‘NICU on Wheels’ transported the premature baby safely to the hospital in a neonatal ambulance. After 100 days of NICU treatment, the 37-week-old baby gained 2.2 kg. The baby was discharged from the hospital after her condition improved and she started breastfeeding. Reema Mishra (33,) and her husband Kamal Mishra (37,) (names changed) were first-time parents and were eagerly awaiting their baby. But suddenly in the evening, Reema felt unusual discomfort and within hours her amniotic sac ruptured. She had no previous illness, no thyroid or diabetes problems, and her antenatal check-up so far was normal, putting her at no risk in terms of delivery.
Reema, suffering from pain, was taken to a nearby private hospital. After examination, Reema started labor pains only at 23 weeks of pregnancy. As her condition was deteriorating, she was delivered vaginally without delay. At the time of birth, the baby weighed only 550 grams. Due to premature birth, the baby required urgent treatment under the supervision of a specialist neonatologist.

What do the experts say?
Neonatal specialist Dr. Prashant Ramtekkar “When we were informed about this case, we knew that this baby needed urgent and advanced medical care,” he said. Babies born at 23 weeks and weighing less than 600 grams are known as ‘micro-preemies’ and have respiratory distress. Risks such as internal bleeding in the brain, bacterial infection and indigestion are faced. Our ‘NICU on Wheels’ team reached the hospital in time and stabilized the newborn baby. Dr. Prashant adds that the baby’s lungs were underdeveloped, he had difficulty breathing and needed ventilator support from the first minute of birth.
The baby was kept on ventilation for seven days, after which he was shifted to non-invasive support. The baby then developed a bacterial infection that interfered with his blood clotting process and the situation became very serious. Treating babies in such cases is very challenging because every organ is immature. We like PDA (Patent ductus arteriosus). Heart problems Carefully managed to prevent, brain examination, ensure the development of vision and hearing.

How did you take care of the baby?
The baby was initially given total parenteral nutrition (enteral) and then breastfed through a feeding tube. Gradually, as the baby digested the milk, we increased his milk intake. Kangaroo Mother Care was launched, helping babies bond with their parents and grow physically and emotionally. At discharge, he was breastfeeding well, gaining weight, and all brain, eye, and hearing tests were normal. The baby was discharged home at 37 weeks, weighing 2.2 kg and breastfeeding properly. The baby had to stay in the NICU for a total of 100 days. We have advised regular follow-up to monitor its growth and development, said Dr. Ramtekkar highlighted.
India is among the countries with the highest preterm birth rates in the world, where about 13% of babies are born preterm and more than 3 million premature babies are born in 2020. These newborn babies are very vulnerable and require special care, said Dr. Senior Neonatal Specialist at Motherhood Hospitals, Lullanagar, Pune. Expressed by Tushar Parikh.
