Before Tamil Nadu assembly elections, Congress MP Tagore took a jibe at PM Modi, PM’s popularity is not electoral success.
New Delhi. Ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Congress MP Manickam Tagore has strongly criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s political strategy for the state. He argued that the BJP’s mix of religion and politics does not match the specific socio-political makeup of the state. Tagore stressed that even though PM Modi draws huge crowds in the state, that popularity has not translated into electoral success for the BJP. Is PM Modi’s charisma and weak local leadership the reason for BJP’s limited electoral gains?

Speaking on Congress’s position, MP Manickam Tagore said that the situation in Tamil Nadu is fundamentally different. He said that there are two sides to this, PM Modi brings a different kind of story here, because Tamil Nadu does not mix religion with politics. What he speaks outside and the ideology that BJP represents is seen as contrary to the core ideology of Tamil Nadu politics. MP Tagore referred to PM Modi’s visit to Madurai, where the Prime Minister visited Tiruparankundram Temple. He said that the PM had given a statement that lighting of Deepam (lamp) was not allowed there. But it is not true. The lamp was lit. BJP wanted to light a lamp near a mosque and this kind of thinking is not accepted in Tamil Nadu. Tagore described this as an example of the use of religious symbols in the state, which had the opposite effect. He further said that Modi’s development agenda finds acceptance among voters, but when politics and religion mix, people get angry.
