Ahmedabad: Head constable who slapped woman suspended

Video of woman being slapped for violating traffic rules in Ahmedabad went viral. Head constable Jayantibhai Jala has been suspended in the case. Investigation is ongoing on the complaints of both the police and the woman.

Gujarat: On Friday, a minor traffic checking incident quickly turned into a big controversy in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad city. While on traffic police duty in Paldi area, a woman was stopped for not wearing a helmet and riding a two-wheeler on the wrong side of the road.

The woman has been identified as Bansari Thakkar. The policeman stopped him citing violation of rules, after which an argument started between the two. According to eyewitnesses, initially the conversation was normal, but gradually the argument escalated.

Matter regarding identity card escalated

According to police officials, the woman demanded the on-duty head constable Jayantibhai Jala to show her identity card. When the constable showed her ID card, the woman allegedly threw him down.

This made the policeman angry and in anger he slapped the woman. People present nearby recorded this entire incident in their mobile cameras. Within no time the video went viral on social media, after which questions started being raised on the police department.

Police took immediate action after the viral video

After the incident came to light, Ahmedabad Police Administration came into action. While giving information to the media, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic West) Bhavna Patel said that the accused head constable Jayantibhai Jala has been suspended with immediate effect.

He said that under any circumstances a policeman does not have the right to assault a common citizen. The case is being investigated impartially and if found guilty, further action will be taken.

The victim woman Bansari Thakkar told the media that during the argument the constable first held her hand. When he protested and asked who gave him the right to touch her, the angry policeman slapped him hard on the face.

The woman claims that she was slapped so hard that blood came out of her mouth. He said that despite being protectors of the law, the policeman has broken the law and he wants justice.

Case registered against woman also

In this case, action has been taken not only against the policeman but also against the woman. Police said that a case of misbehavior and preventing a public servant from performing his duty has been registered against Bansari Thakkar.

Paldi police station has received a complaint from the woman against the constable, while the constable has also lodged a complaint against the woman. Police say that an impartial investigation is being conducted on the basis of statements of both the parties, CCTV footage and viral videos.
