AI assistants for office work- The Week
Google has announced that its new tool, Google Workspace Studio, is now generally available for business customers. This platform allows anyone to create AI agents—smart digital assistants that can handle repetitive office tasks automatically—without needing to know computer programming.
The technology uses Google’s Gemini 3 AI system, which can understand context, reason through problems, and work with different types of information like text, images, and documents.
The key difference from older automation tools is that these AI agents are flexible and can adapt to new situations rather than just following rigid rules.
From early testing to rollout
According to Google, customers in the early testing program have already used these AI agents to complete more than 20 million tasks in just the last 30 days. The applications range from simple reminders to complex business processes like sorting legal documents and managing travel requests.
For example, the German cleaning equipment company Kärcher built a team of AI agents to evaluate new product ideas. Earlier, this process required hours of meetings and scattered notes. Now, when someone suggests a new feature in Google Chat, one AI agent assesses the idea, another checks if it’s technically possible, a third designs the user experience, and a final agent creates a complete user story. This has reduced their drafting time by 90 per cent—from hours to just two minutes.
How Workspace Studio works
Creating an agent is simple, Google states. Users can either choose from dozens of ready-made templates or just describe what they want in plain language. For instance, you could tell the system: “If an email contains a question for me, label it as ‘To respond’ and notify me in Chat.”
The AI will automatically create an agent that can identify questions in emails and even extract important details like action items or invoice numbers.
These agents work across Google Workspace apps, including Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Chat. They can also connect to popular business tools like Salesforce, Asana, and Jira.
For companies with special needs, technical teams can add custom features using Apps Script. The rollout will happen over the next few weeks for business customers. This means that, for now, Google Workspace Studio is not available to individual Gmail users.
