Air India CEO Campbell Wilson resigns, leaves post before end of tenure amidst challenging times of AI
New Delhi: Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tata Group-owned airline ‘Air India’ Campbell Wilson has resigned (Air India CEO Campbell Wilson Resigns). According to various reports that emerged on Tuesday, Wilson has decided to step down before the completion of his five-year term. Although the airline has not yet issued any official statement in this regard, it is being said that Wilson is currently on his notice period.

Board’s decision to depart before tenure
Campbell Wilson was appointed Managing Director (MD) and CEO of Air India on a five-year contract in 2022. His tenure was to end in July 2027. According to reports, his resignation has been accepted in the board meeting held last week. However, he will remain with the company until a successor is found. Wilson previously served as the CEO of Scoot, a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines.
The airline is going through challenging times
The last few times have been very difficult for Air India. The airline has been under regulatory scrutiny since the plane crash in Ahmedabad in June last year, which took the lives of 260 people. Furthermore, the airline has struggled to make financial improvements at the expected pace since privatization. Rising fuel prices and delays in delivery of new aircraft have also put pressure on the airline’s operations.

Search for new leadership begins
According to sources, Tata Group was looking for a new face to replace Wilson since last year. The board is looking for a leadership who can take the airline out of this troubled situation and take it on the path to profitability. After the Ahmedabad accident, questions were continuously being raised on the management regarding safety standards and operational efficiency.
Major changes in aviation sector
This news of change in leadership in Air India has come at a time when its competitor airline ‘IndiGo’ has also made major changes. Recently IndiGo has announced the appointment of William Walsh as its new CEO, who will replace Peter Albers. Walsh will take up the role on August 3, 2026. The change in the top leadership of the two largest airlines in the Indian aviation market is being considered important for the future direction of the sector.

After acquiring Air India from the Government of India in 2022, the Tata Group had aimed to make it a global class airline.
