Air pollution serious in Delhi-NCR: CJI asks lawyers to use hybrid

The Delhi-NCR region continues to be in the grip of severe air pollution. The capital’s air reached AQI 461 on Sunday, the worst level this season. It was recorded above AQI 400 for the second consecutive day, making it difficult for the people of the city to even breathe.

New Delhi: Air pollution in Delhi-NCR has reached severe levels and the rising AQI is making it difficult for people to breathe. The air quality index (AQI) in the capital was recorded at 461 on Sunday, which is the worst level this season. A day ago this number was 432 and even today AQI remains beyond 400 in many areas.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi’s air continues to remain in the severe category. In view of the increasing pollution, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant has given relief to the lawyers and litigants and advised them not to stay out for unnecessary time and take care of their health.

CJI gave advice to lawyers and litigants

Chief Justice Surya Kant said that considering the pollution situation, if possible, lawyers and parties should plead their cases through video conferencing. In the circular issued by the Supreme Court administration on Sunday, it was said that in the listed cases, lawyers and parties can use ‘hybrid mode’.

GRAP-4 scheme implemented in Delhi

Delhi government has implemented Stage 4 of GRAP (Graded Response Action Plan) to deal with air pollution. Under this scheme, many restrictions have been imposed in the city so that pollution can be reduced. Activities prohibited under GRAP-4:

  • Ban on entry of heavy trucks
  • Ban on BS-4 diesel vehicles
  • Ban on BS-3 petrol vehicles
  • Exemption to vehicles carrying essential services

The slow speed of wind and cold weather in Delhi-NCR has further increased the pollution. A thick blanket of mist and smog in the morning significantly affected visibility.
