Airbag Malfunction: Airbag suddenly burst in a parked car, painful death of 25 year old youth; Know why this safety feature becomes fatal
Whenever we go to buy a new or old car, our first priority is to see how many airbags are provided in the car. We assume that the more airbags there are, the safer the journey will be. But can you imagine that this airbag meant for safety can sometimes take your life even without any accident? Recently, one such heart-wrenching and shocking case has come to light from Mira Road area near Mumbai. Here 25 year old youth Mohit Soni died due to sudden airbag burst in his own parked car. The car was completely parked and there was no collision from outside, yet it became a safety system call. Let us know the whole truth about this painful accident and the ways to avoid it. How did this painful incident happen: Without any collision, plastic cover was placed directly on the neck. According to reports received from police and eyewitnesses, Mohit Soni was sitting inside his 15 year old Honda car. The car was parked peacefully on the side of the road. Then suddenly, without any warning or signal, the airbag installed in the steering wheel of the car opened with a loud bang. The outer plastic cover of the airbag came out with such great speed and pressure that it directly hit the right side of Mohit’s neck. This attack was so strong that Mohit suffered a deep injury and due to excessive bleeding, he died before reaching the hospital. In the initial investigation by the police, no marks of any kind of collision or dent were found on the vehicle from outside. Why do airbags in vehicles suddenly explode without any accident? According to general rules, the airbags of a car become active only when the speed of the vehicle is high and there is a strong impact from the front or side. But in old cars or technically broken systems, these can be triggered even without an accident: Short circuit and sensor malfunction: In vehicles older than 10 to 15 years, electrical short circuit or aging of sensors (Crash Sensors) can cause them to suddenly send wrong signals. Danger of rust and moisture: If rain or flood water ever enters the car, the sensors installed under the seat or in the dashboard get rusted. This corrosion completely ruins the system, causing the airbags to deploy even without any impact. Speed of 300 km/h: Why is airbag deployment so dangerous? If we understand technically, then to inflate the airbag in just a few milliseconds, a small chemical explosion is made inside it, due to which nitrogen gas is produced. This blast is so powerful that its opening speed can be up to about 300 kilometers per hour. If a person is sitting too close to the steering wheel while driving or sitting in a car, this airbag can seriously injure him instead of saving him. Apart from this, the plastic cover of old vehicles becomes hard and brittle with time, which after bursting directly attacks the human body like fragments of a sharp weapon. In Mohit’s case also, the same hard plastic cover proved fatal. Never ignore the ‘Airbag Warning Light’ on the dashboard, take immediate action. To avoid such unwanted and terrible accidents, car owners should keep some very important things in mind. First of all, get your car checked at an authorized service center on time. While starting the car, keep a close eye on the ‘Airbag Warning Light’ visible on the dashboard. If this light remains on continuously even while the vehicle is running, it clearly means that some technical malfunction has occurred in the airbag system. Never ignore it and immediately take it to a mechanic and get the computer diagnosed. Take special care of cars older than 10 years, maintain a safety distance of 10 inches. If your car is 10 years old or more, then get its entire safety mechanism checked by a recognized dealership or RTO certified center, because sometimes the chemicals and sensors used within the airbag have a fixed expiry date. Additionally, always maintain a safe distance of at least 10 inches from the steering wheel and dashboard while driving a car or sitting in the passenger seat. Due to this, even if the airbag deploys in an emergency, it will touch your chest after fully deploying, thereby reducing the risk of direct injury. A little awareness can keep you and your family safe.
