Airbnb expands into hotels, car rentals and grocery delivery services

New Delhi: airbnb has announced a major expansion of its services, adding boutique hotels, airport transfers, car rentals and grocery delivery to its platform as the company looks to transform itself into a complete travel ecosystem.

The move marks one of the biggest changes in Airbnb’s business model since its launch nearly two decades ago in San Francisco. The company is aiming to capture a larger share of the global travel market currently dominated by traditional travel platforms and hotel booking companies.

Airbnb Responds to Tightening Global Rental Rules

The expansion also comes at a time when several cities and countries are tightening regulations around short-term rentals. Authorities in Spain recently imposed penalties over thousands of allegedly non-compliant listings, while cities like Barcelona, ​​New York and Paris have strengthened restrictions on private rental properties.

Industry experts believe Airbnb’s diversification strategy is partly designed to reduce dependence on short-term home rentals, which have faced growing political and legal scrutiny worldwide.

Hotels, Transfers and Grocery Delivery Added

Under the updated platform, users will now be able to book boutique and independent hotels directly through the Airbnb app. ceo Brian Chesky said the company wants to support smaller hotel operators that compete with large global chains.

The app will also offer airport and train station transfers, luggage storage and grocery delivery services. Grocery delivery will initially be available through partnerships in more than 25 US cities.

Airbnb further confirmed that car rental services will soon be integrated into the platform, though official partners for the service have not yet been revealed.

Artificial Intelligence Features Introduced

The company is also upgrading its app with artificial intelligence tools, including a multilingual virtual support assistant available in 11 languages. Airbnb says the new features are designed to make travel planning more personalized and convenient for users.

Speaking at the launch event in San Francisco, Chesky said travel experiences should go beyond convenience and help people explore destinations more meaningfully.

Airbnb reported first-quarter revenue of $2.68 billion in 2026, reflecting continued growth as the company expands beyond traditional home-sharing services.
