Airline Refund Rules: Aviation regulator DGCA has revised ticket refund rules for airlines. Under this, passengers can now cancel or change flight tickets within 48 hours of booking, subject to certain conditions, without incurring any additional charges. Amending passenger-friendly rules, the DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) has also said that if a passenger points out any mistake within 24 hours of booking and the ticket is booked directly through the airline’s website, the airlines should not charge any extra for rectification in the same person’s name.

In case of tickets purchased through travel agents/portals, the responsibility for reimbursement will be with the airline companies as the agents are their appointed representatives, the DGCA said. Directorate General of Civil Aviation has given a big relief to air passengers. Now if you cancel your flight ticket within 48 hours of booking, you will not be charged any extra charges. This facility has been provided by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation as per the new rules. DGCA has taken this step keeping in mind the complaints of washes and delays in ticket refunds.

As per the new revised DGCA rules, if the ticket is booked directly from the airline’s website, passengers can cancel their ticket within 48 hours of booking without any extra charges. Also, if there is a name mistake on the ticket and the passenger corrects it within 24 hours, no charge will be made. This facility will be applicable only to passengers who book online.

If the flight ticket is purchased through a travel agent or an online portal, the refund will be the responsibility of the airline. DGCA has directed airlines to process all refunds within 14 working days. This means passengers will no longer have to wait for long. The repayment process will be completely digital and transparent. Passengers whose flights are canceled due to medical emergencies will not face any difficulty in getting refunds. The change was made by the DGCA in December 2025 following complaints regarding refunds of airline tickets and problems encountered in IndiGo flights.
