AIUDF, AIMIM, Congress…, what is the condition of the scattered opposition in front of BJP in Assam?
Elections are going to be held on 126 assembly seats of Assam. Bharatiya Janata Party is moving forward on the suppression of infiltrators and Hindutva politics in Assam, on the other hand, Congress is busy mobilizing minority votes. Bharatiya Janata Party currently has a clear majority, on the other hand, Congress is already looking for an alliance before the elections. The strongest ally of the Congress alliance, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), is now its biggest political enemy. Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi has said that because of AIUDF there is polarization of Hindu votes. In the year 2021, both the parties had contested the elections together, now both have gone their separate ways.
BJP holds twice as many seats as Congress in the Assembly and three times as many in the Lok Sabha. Congress is on 29 seats in the assembly, BJP is on 60 seats. Congress has only 3 seats in the Lok Sabha, BJP has 9 seats. In such a situation, in front of BJP’s Hindutva, Congress has the only option of consolidation of minority votes. Congress seems to be causing harm to itself by angering AIUDF. Congress is no longer the core party of the minorities, while AIUDF and All India Ittehadul Majlis-e-Muslimeen (AIMIM) are called the core parties of the minorities.

What are the equations of Congress alliance?
Congress has planned an alliance with parties like Communist Party of India (Marxist), Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad, CPI (Marxist-Leninist), Jatiya Dal Assam and All Party Hill Leaders Conference. Congress is eyeing the tribal vote bank as well as the minority voters. The situation of Congress alone is bad in Assam. Never came to power in Assam since 2016. There was a crushing defeat in the 2021 elections also. Congress is looking forward to every possible alliance.
What is the challenge before Congress?
The biggest problem for Congress is All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). The biggest impact of the decision not to forge an alliance with AIUDF is the dispersion of minority votes. Congress is also accusing the current government of minority oppression, Congress says that the Assam government is also expelling the legitimate Muslim citizens of Assam by calling them infiltrators. Meanwhile, AIUDF leader Badruddin Ajmal says that Congress has remained silent in the areas of Assam where bulldozers have operated.

How many seats does Congress want to contest?
Congress wants to contest more than 100 seats out of 126 seats. Congress wants to limit other alliance partners to less than 26 seats. If Congress had fielded AIUDF, more seats might have had to be given. Congress will now form an alliance with Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad, CPI and CPM. Congress believes that alliance with AIUDF leads to polarization of Hindu votes and benefits BJP.
Why is there rift between AIUDF and Congress?
Gaurav Gogoi has now started finding AIUDF, the party headed by Badruddin Ajmal, as communal. In the year 2021, both the parties had contested the elections together but the results were in favor of BJP. By December 2025, relations between the two parties had further soured. Gaurav Gogoi said that AIUDF is a communal party and Congress will not form any alliance with it.
Gaurav Goi announced that Congress itself will contest 100 seats out of 126 and will give the remaining seats to other allies. AIUDF will be excluded. One of his statements remained in the headlines-
Gaurav Gogoi, Congress President, Assam:-
Badruddin Ajmal is the lifeline of Himanta Biswa Sharma. Whenever Himanta is in need, he dials the number 108. This time Ajmal alone will not be enough, so Himant is calling Asaduddin Owaisi also.
Why is Congress calling AIUDF-AIMIM the beam team of BJP?
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has become the postboy of Hindutva. BJP is giving him many important responsibilities at the national level. Wherever assembly elections are held, BJP includes him in the list of star campaigners. He talks about Hindutva, Badruddin Ajmal and Asaduddin Owaisi are big faces of Muslim politics. Congress says that BJP gets the benefit of their politics. Both polarize Muslims, Hindus unite in favor of BJP.

How strong is AIUDF in Assam?
The number of Muslims in Assam is about 34 percent. All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) is a popular party of Bengali-speaking Muslims in West Bengal. This party is in a strong position in the state. In the year 2006, AIUDF had 10 assembly seats, by 2011 this party reached 18 seats. In 2016, success was achieved on 13 seats and then in 2021, success was achieved on 16 seats.
AIUDF is a strong factor in Assam, due to which Congress is avoiding forming an alliance. Minority voters, once the core votebank of Congress, are now with AIUDF. Now because of this, Congress’s support base has declined significantly in Assam. It is a different matter that Badruddin Ajmal’s party could not win even a single seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Badruddin Ajmal, who had won the elections for three consecutive times, himself lost his seat.
How strong is Congress in Assam?
Congress, which had formed an alliance with AIUDF in the year 2021, is now their political enemy. In 2016, Congress lost power for the first time. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by BJP had won 75 seats in the year 2021. The Chief Minister remained from BJP only. The condition of Congress was bad. The Congress led alliance could get only 50 seats. Although Congress was on 26 seats in 2016, it was considered a big lead.
Where does Congress stand now?
There are 14 Lok Sabha seats and 126 assembly seats in Assam. In the 2024 elections, BJP won 9 seats here, Congress could barely win 3 seats. Assam Gana Parishad and United People’s Party Liberal have won 1 seat each. In Assam, BJP has the maximum of 60 seats, Congress has 29 seats. AIUDF has 16 seats, Assam Gana Parishad has 9 seats, UPPL has 6 seats and an independent candidate has won one seat. There are seats of 5 other parties. The interesting thing is that BJP has double the seats in the Assembly and 3 times more seats in the Lok Sabha.
