Akhilesh Yadav’s expansionist strategy, why is he going to contest elections in Assam?

A big state level party of the country is going to contest the Assam Assembly elections, 2026. However, only time will tell how much success this party will get in Assam. Actually, this party is none other than the main opposition party of Uttar Pradesh and the third largest socialist party in the country in the Lok Sabha. Actually, former UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has decided to try his luck in the Assam Assembly elections. The party plans to contest at least five assembly seats in Assam.

According to party sources, this important decision can be officially announced soon. In such a situation, the question arises that why does the Samajwadi Party want to go away from Uttar Pradesh or its surrounding states and contest the assembly elections in Assam? Let us know what is the party’s strategy behind this…

On how many seats will SP contest elections?

Akhilesh Yadav has not taken this decision just like that, but his expansionist strategy is behind it. In fact, SP has planned to contest elections on at least 5 seats in Assam as part of its strategy to achieve the status of a national political party. According to the information, Samajwadi Party can field its candidates in those areas of Assam where the number of Muslim voters is high.

It is believed that by contesting elections on these seats, Samajwadi Party wants to register its political presence in Assam. Along with this, this step is also being considered as part of the strategy of expanding the party at the national level.

Samajwadi Party’s strength in the country

Samajwadi Party currently has 102 MLAs in the UP Assembly, 2 in Maharashtra and 1 in the Gujarat Assembly. Apart from this, in recent years the party has strongly contested the elections of Madhya Pradesh apart from these three states but it did not get even a single seat. But now Akhilesh Yadav is working on the plan to contest assembly elections in the states with full strength and preparation.

Along with this, at present Samajwadi Party is the third largest party in the country in terms of number of seats in the Lok Sabha. It has 37 Lok Sabha MPs, but all of them are from Uttar Pradesh. Due to limited organizational expansion in other states outside UP, Samajwadi Party still has the status of a state-level recognized party.

How to get national party status?

To get the status of a national party, a party has to secure a minimum of 6 percent of the total valid votes in at least 4 states in the Lok Sabha or Assembly elections. Apart from this, it is also necessary to have at least 4 seats in the Lok Sabha or to win at least 2 percent of the total seats i.e. 11 seats from 3 different states. SP has more seats in the Lok Sabha than this standard, but all its MPs come from Uttar Pradesh only. It does not have a single MP outside UP.

SP’s presence outside Uttar Pradesh is limited. Even though the party has 2 MLAs in Maharashtra and 1 in Gujarat, this number is not enough to get the status of a national party. SP supremo Akhilesh Yadav has already said publicly that his aim is to make Samajwadi Party a national level party. In this series, SP has decided to field five candidates in the Assam Assembly elections.

How many votes did SP get in MP, Maharashtra and Gujarat?

Samajwadi Party contested the Maharashtra Assembly elections 2024 in recent years. The party got 2 seats. Both the MLAs are Raees Sheikh from Bhiwandi East Assembly and state president Abu Azmi himself from Mankhurd Shivajinagar Assembly. In this election, SP had received a total vote share of 0.38 percent. Apart from this, in Gujarat Assembly elections 2022, Kandal Jadeja had won from Kutiyana on Samajwadi Party ticket. In Gujarat, SP got 0.55 percent vote share.

Apart from this, Samajwadi Party has a better chance to make political ground in Madhya Pradesh. In the same state, in the year 2003, 7 MLAs of the party had won and reached the Assembly. The districts located on the border of Madhya Pradesh adjoining UP have been favorable for SP. This is the reason why SP had fielded 71 candidates in the last assembly elections 2023. Even though the party could not win even a single seat in this election, it caused huge loss to Congress on about a dozen seats, which benefited BJP. SP got 0.50 percent vote share in this election.

The party had earlier also contested the 2018 assembly elections. In this, the party had fielded candidates on 52 seats. SP was successful in winning 1 seat in 2018. SP got 1.3 percent vote share in this election. SP may also try its hand in Haryana in the upcoming assembly elections.
