Akshay Kumar’s biggest flop film, became a hit after OTT release, is a remake of superhit South movie…, its not Khel Khel Mein

In 2024, many Bollywood films have struggled at the box office and received little attention on OTT platforms. However, one film that flopped theatrically is making waves online. The Akshay Kumar-starrer Sapphirewhich was released just a few months ago, is now trending and receiving an enthusiastic response from audience. Moreover, it has achieved impressive ratings on IMDb, surprising many.

According to trade analyst Sacnilk, Akshaya’s Kumar emotional drama had a budget of Rs 85 crore but earned only Rs 22.13 crore domestically and Rs 30.02 crore worldwide. Although, the film didn’t perform well at the box office, but is still being loved on OTT. The story of the film is resonating with the audience and has received number 1 rating on Disney + Hotstar.

Helmed by Sudha Kongara, the film features Akshay Kumar alongside actors Radhika Madan, Paresh Rawal, and Seema Biswas. It was released in theatres on July 12, 2024 and is a Hindi remake of the hit South Indian film ‘Soorarai Pottru’, starring superstar Surya.

Talking about the story, Safira is about Veer Mhatre (Akshay Kumar), who joins Air Force but is unable to see his father one last time due to high flight ticket prices. This leaves, Veer deeply shocked, so he decides to star a budget airline. Elaborating on the film, Akshay Kumar said, “Sarfira is a film about a Sarfira insaan who dared to dream big and work for it tirelessly. I’m a firm believer that when a dream transforms into ambition, nothing can stop it from coming true and that’s what I respected about Vir’s dream; it became a passion-driven cause that brought about a change for the common people. I like to be a part of stories that inspire and amount to a bigger picture, Sarfira is one such story where I saw my inner beliefs being a part of the script.”
