Alka Yagnik’s voice, Anand Bakshi’s lyrics… Sanjay Dutt’s song on which there was an uproar, banned from radio-TV
Tezzbuzz Desk – There have been many songs in Bollywood and Tollywood which gave rise to controversies as soon as they were released. While in recent times, Nora Fatehi’s song ‘Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke’ and Badshah’s ‘Tattiri’ were in the news due to their lyrics, in the 90s too, there was a song which created an uproar in the entire country.
We are talking about the famous song ‘Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai’ from Sanjay Dutt’s film Khalnayak, which created a storm of controversies as soon as it was released.
The matter reached the court from Parliament
This song, released in 1993, was embroiled in controversy due to its ‘double meaning’ lyrics. Not only did the common people object to this, but the matter also reached the Parliament. There were protests at many places and petitions were also filed in the court regarding this song. In view of the growing controversy, it was even banned from government platforms like Doordarshan and All India Radio.
Madhuri’s dance made it iconic
This song was filmed on Madhuri Dixit, whose dance and expressions made it even more popular. Neena Gupta was also seen in the song. Its lyrics were written by famous lyricist Anand Bakshi, while it was sung by Alka Yagnik and Ila Arun. It was composed by music composer duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal.
Record breaking success amid controversy
Even though there was huge protest against this song, it had no effect on its popularity. On the contrary, the controversy brought it into more discussion. According to reports, within just a week of its release, around 1 crore audio cassettes of this song were sold.
Today, even after more than 30 years, ‘Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai’ is played widely in parties and weddings and is counted among the most popular and iconic songs of Hindi cinema. This song is an example of the fact that controversies sometimes make a creation even more popular.
