The Allahabad High Court adjourned the hearing on the Gyanvapi mosque dispute case on Monday, citing the matter is pending before the Supreme Court. The Allahabad High Court will next hear the matter on February 3.
Hearing the matter, Allahabad High Court Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal noted that since the counsel for the parties informed that the matter is pending before the Supreme Court and since the apex court is set to hear the matter on January 27, the hearing on petitioner Rakhi Singh’s plea in this court is adjourned to February 3.
Singh is one of the petitioners in the case, which seeks a scientific survey of the ablution area (wazu khana) of the Gyanvapi complex. According to the Hindu side, a scientific survey by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is essential to ascertain the true nature of the structure. While the Hindu side claims it to be a Shivling, the Muslim side said it was a fountain.
Earlier, a Varanasi court refused to direct the ASI to survey the wazu khana’ area of the Gyanvapi mosque. According to the petitioners, the survey is essential in the interest of justice, and it shall benefit the plaintiff(s) and defendants alike. In the petition, Singh argued that a scientific survey will also help the court arrive at a decision on the suit.
