Telugu superstar Allu Arjun has come under fire after a remark he made during his annual fan meet in Hyderabad sparked widespread criticism on social media. While urging his fans to steer clear of online hate and fan wars, the actor jokingly suggested that they should “wait outside the house of the girl you like” instead. The comment, intended as humour, was criticised by many online users, who argued that it trivialised or normalised stalking behaviour.
The actor addressed thousands of fans at the annual Allu Arjun Fan Association summit on Tuesday. Dressed in his signature black outfit, he used the occasion to deliver a message not only to his supporters but also to his critics and “anti-fans”, urging everyone to stop wasting time on negativity and online trolling.
“I’ve been wanting to say something to my fans, anti-fans and haters for a long time,” Allu Arjun said during the event. He encouraged people to avoid spending energy on individuals they dislike, comparing hatred to spending money on something they would never buy. “If you had ₹100, would you spend it on something you don’t like? Exactly, don’t spend it. Spend time doing something you like,” he said before adding, “Go wait outside the house of the girl you like instead.”
Although the larger message against online abuse was welcomed by many fans, the final line from his speech quickly went viral, with critics arguing that it sent the wrong message. A clip of the speech circulated widely on social media, where several users expressed concern that public figures should be more careful about making jokes that could be interpreted as encouraging inappropriate behaviour.
Many social media users accused the actor of making light of stalking. One user questioned whether celebrities realised the influence they held over young fans, while another pointed out that such comments could encourage impressionable followers to imitate problematic behaviour. Others remarked that the joke appeared insensitive, especially at a time when conversations around women’s safety and consent have become increasingly prominent.
Despite the backlash, a section of fans defended Allu Arjun, arguing that his statement had been taken out of context and that the actor’s primary message was about discouraging toxic fan culture and online trolling. Supporters maintained that the controversial remark was a throwaway joke rather than a literal suggestion and should not overshadow the broader appeal for positivity.
The controversy comes as Allu Arjun continues work on his upcoming film Raaka, directed by Atlee. The actor has remained one of the biggest stars in Indian cinema following the blockbuster success of the Pushpa franchise, with his public appearances routinely attracting massive crowds.
