Amazing cold in April: 11 year record broken in Delhi, now heat will increase

New Delhi: This time in April, Delhiites saw such weather, which is not usually expected in this month. The unusual drop in temperature in the capital on Wednesday broke the record of the last 11 years. Cold winds, clouds and light rain made the weather of April seem like winter.

This unexpected change not only gave relief to the people, but after several days the air of the capital also appeared clear. However, the Meteorological Department has made it clear that this relief will not last for long and the temperature will increase rapidly in the coming days.

Wednesday became the coldest day of April

On Wednesday, the maximum temperature recorded in Delhi was 28.2 degrees Celsius, which is 6.9 degrees below normal. This was the coldest day in the month of April in the last 11 years. Earlier on April 23, 2016, the maximum temperature was recorded at 27.2 degrees Celsius.

Due to the presence of clouds throughout the day, strong winds and light rain, people got relief from the heat and the weather remained pleasant.

Rain and winds changed the mood of the weather

According to Safdarjung Meteorological Centre, 6.4 mm rainfall was recorded in the last 24 hours till 8:30 am on Wednesday, which is the highest since April 4, 2023.

Talking about other areas:

  • Palam received 0.6 mm rain
  • Very light rain recorded in Lodhi Road
  • While there was no rain in Ridge and Ayanagar

Temperature conditions in different areas

Maximum temperatures were recorded much below normal in various parts of the capital:

  • Palam: 27.2°C (8.3 degrees below normal)
  • Lodhi Road: 28.0°C (6.0 degrees less)
  • Ridge: 28.8°C (6.3 degrees lower)
  • Ayanagar: 28.0°C (6.9 degrees lower)

Minimum temperature also remained below normal:

Safdarjung: 16.8°C (down 3.2 degrees)
Palam: 15.5°C (4.5 degrees less)
Lodhi Road: 16.2°C (2.8 degrees less)
Ridge: 15.3°C (4.8 degrees lower)
Ayanagar: 16.4°C (2.5 degrees less)

What is the reason for cold?

According to IMD scientists, this cold is mainly due to western disturbance. It is currently active over North Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir, causing thunderstorms and rain in North-Western India.

He further said that the temperature is likely to increase from Wednesday onwards.

Now the temperature will increase, heat will return

According to the Meteorological Department, the temperature will increase rapidly in the coming days. The maximum temperature may increase by 6–8 degrees in north-west India, while an increase of 8–10 degrees is possible in the western Himalayan regions.

On April 9, the minimum temperature in Delhi is expected to be 15.0 degrees and the maximum temperature will be 31.0 degrees Celsius. The sky will remain clear and the weather will gradually become summer-like.

AQI improved, air became cleaner

Due to favorable change in weather, improvement in the air quality of Delhi was also seen. The Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 93, which falls in the ‘satisfactory’ category.

According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB):

  • 0–50: good
  • 51–100: satisfactory
  • 101–200: moderate
  • 201–300: bad
  • 301–400: very bad
  • 401–500: serious
