New Zealand appoints Amelia Kerr as captain for all formats
Delhi: Amelia Kerr has been appointed the new all-format captain of the New Zealand women’s cricket team. 25-year-old Kerr has taken over this responsibility after Sophie Devine, who stepped down after the Women’s World Cup in October 2025. Now Kerr will regularly lead both the ODI and T20 teams. Before this, she had gained captaincy experience in four international matches.
Got responsibility in important international cycle
Kerr’s appointment has come at a time when the New Zealand women’s team is going to play many big tournaments in the next three years. These include the T20 World Cup to be held in England, the proposed T20 Champions Trophy in 2027 and the T20 World Cup along with the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. In such a situation, the team management is considering this as an important step in terms of future strategy.
Great all-round record
Kerr, who made her international debut in 2016 at the age of 16, has played 172 matches so far. He has scored a total of 3757 runs and taken 201 wickets. She is New Zealand’s third most successful bowler and fifth highest run scorer. His contribution was decisive in the 2024 T20 World Cup victory, where he was named Player of the Tournament. Later she also received the honor of ICC Women Cricketer of the Year.
Coach’s confidence and the way forward
Head coach Ben Sawyer described Kerr as a natural leader and said his appointment was part of a plan to bring stability to the team through 2029. Kerr will start her captaincy tenure with the home series against Zimbabwe, whose T20 series will start from February 25 at Seddon Park.
