New Delhi, 26 October (Hindustan Reporter). New Zealand women's all-rounder Amelia Kerr has been ruled out of the remaining ODIs against India after injuring her left quadricep muscle in the series opener at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
In that match, Amelia suffered an injury during her spell of 4-42 and came to bat at number nine, where she remained unbeaten on 25 as New Zealand chased down the target of 227 in 40.4 overs. Was out on 168 runs.
New Zealand Cricket (NZC) said in a statement that Amelia was taken for a scan on the morning after the match on October 24. The scan revealed a grade one quadricep tear, which will take about three weeks to heal.
Head coach Ben Sawyer said, “We are really saddened for Mellie. Injuries are always a challenging time for any player and we know how disappointed he is at not being able to play in these games. “Everyone knows what an important part of this team Melli is, so we will definitely miss him, but we wish him a speedy recovery.”
Amelia came into the ODI series against India after New Zealand achieved a career high by winning the 2024 Women's T20 World Cup in the UAE. She took 15 wickets and scored 135 runs in the T20 World Cup, which is the most wickets taken by any player in any edition of the Women's T20 World Cup.
NZC said Amelia would return home to begin rehabilitation on 27 October, with the team not seeking any replacements in their squad with the final match of the series to be played on 29 October.
To gain automatic qualification for the 2025 Women's ODI World Cup, they will have to finish in the top five in the table by winning their remaining matches in the championship and maintaining their net run rate ahead of other teams. The second ODI between India and New Zealand will be played on 27 October in Ahmedabad, after which the last match of the series will be played on 29 October.
