Khawaja claimed that Afghanistan’s anti-Soviet struggle in the 1980s was not for religious reasons. Behind it was American diplomacy. According to him, Russia has not done anything in Afghanistan that warrants a declaration of jihad.
Khawaja has practically challenged what Pakistan has been saying for decades. According to Pak Defense Minister, Pakistan is fighting against Afghanistan to save Islam – this is not true. This fight in the name of Jihad was misguided and destructive.
At the same time, Khawaja claimed that Afghanistan’s anti-Soviet struggle in the 1980s was not for any religious reason. Behind it was American diplomacy. And in this context, he also attacked Washington and claimed that America threw them away by using them like toilet paper.
Referring to the post-2001 period, Khawaja said Pakistan had taken a stand against the Taliban to support America’s war on terror. But when Pakistan sank into radicalism and economic pressure, Washington backed off.
