America will give a refund of ₹ 1 lakh crore to India, know how the path for Trump tariff refund was cleared
New Delhi: After the court’s rebuke on the tariff policy of the Trump administration in America, good news has come for India. America can refund the illegal tariffs imposed on Indian goods. Its total amount can range from Rs 83,000 to Rs 1 lakh crore.
Court ban on Trump’s tariffs
The Trump government had imposed heavy tariffs on goods from many countries under the ‘America First’ policy. These tariffs were imposed under the ‘International Emergency Economic Powers Act’ (IEEPA), but the US Supreme Court and appellate courts declared these tariffs wrong.
After the court decision, America has opened the way for global tariff refund of a total of $ 166 billion. The US Customs Department (CBP) has started a new online platform named CAPE from April 20, 2026, which will speed up the refund process.
How much refund can India get?
According to the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), $10 to 12 billion (about Rs 83,000 to Rs 1 lakh crore) of this refund is related to Indian goods. These three areas are expected to benefit the most.
- Textiles and apparel: about $4 billion
- Engineering Goods: About 4 billion dollars
- Chemicals: about 2 billion dollars
How will Indian exporters get the benefit?
Refund will not be given directly to Indian exporters. Only US importers (buyers) can make claims. Therefore, Indian exporters will have to negotiate with their American buyers. There are three main ways to take advantage.
- Refund sharing agreement: Decide in a written contract that a portion of the refund will be given to the Indian supplier.
- Price revision: Indirectly gaining the benefit of refund by keeping a slightly lower price in future orders.
- Priority: US buyers who share refunds will receive priority in future orders.
Sohrab Bararia, partner, RoyGrant Thornton India, Expert, described the CAPE platform as an important step. He said that this will reduce paper work and refund will be available quickly.
He also advised that it is important to keep all the old data ready and verified at the right time. It is believed that this is not only a business relief, but also a good opportunity to further strengthen the economic relations between India and America.
