Amidst the war, Russia’s ‘Doomsday’ ship reaches Iran, will a new level of war erupt in the Middle East?
New Delhi: The tension between America and Iran is at its peak and meanwhile, Russia has taken such a step which has caught the attention of the whole world. According to flight tracking data, Russia has sent its very special airborne command aircraft Tu-214PU to Tehran. This is not an ordinary government aircraft. It is also called Russia’s ‘flying command center’ and ‘doomsday aircraft’. This one flight is not being considered as just a journey. Experts are calling this a big sign of secret and high-level talks between Moscow and Tehran.
What is Tu-214PU: flying command center?
The Tu-214PU is a military and government version of Russia’s Tupolev Tu-214. It has been specially designed to run the army and government by keeping the country’s top leadership safe in the event of war or national disaster.
This aircraft is equipped with state-of-the-art encrypted communication, secure data links and command and control systems. That means the President can directly give orders to the army even while being in the sky. This is the reason why defense experts keep it in the category of ‘Doomsday Plane’.
It is operated by Russia’s Rossiya Special Flight Squadron. This unit handles the most sensitive flights of Putin and top officials. Unlike ordinary VIP aircraft, the Tu-214PU can also operate in high-risk areas.
What is the meaning of Tehran landing?
Analysts believe that amid tension, this aircraft going to Iran cannot be just a formality. There can be 3 big reasons behind this:
- Defense Cooperation: Russia can talk to Iran about help in arms, air defense and technology.
- Intelligence: Intel sharing against America between the two countries may intensify.
- Military Strategy: There can be joint planning regarding Hormuz and the entire Middle East.
When on one hand America is attacking Iran’s missile bases, air defense and drone infrastructure, then this activism of Russia can change the geopolitics of the region.
Old platform, new mission
The Tu-214PU is based on the Soviet-era Tu-204 project. This twin-engine aircraft took its first flight in 1989. Later, cargo, surveillance and government versions were made from it. Russia aims to build 20 Tu-214s every year by 2028 to reduce dependence on foreign technology, but production is very slow right now.
increasing tension in the gulf
Meanwhile, America has claimed that Iran does not have control over the Strait of Hormuz. Iran rejected this and warned against foreign interference. There have also been reports of Iranian attacks and missile alerts on American bases in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan. The Tehran landing of Russia’s ‘Qayamat’ plane has added fuel to the fire. Now everyone’s eyes are on which direction the Middle East will go due to this proximity of Moscow-Tehran.
