After delimitation, seats in South India will not decrease but will increase. Amit Shah explained the complete mathematics in Lok Sabha.
Amit Shah on Delimitation in Lok Sabha: Union Home Minister Amit Shah, while giving a clear answer to the apprehensions being raised regarding delimitation in Parliament, said that the representation of the states of South India will not decrease but will increase. Rejecting the political confusion being spread by the opposition, he said that the aim of the government is to give balanced representation to all the states.
During the discussion in the Lok Sabha on the Constitution (131st) Amendment Bill, 2026, Delimitation Bill, 2026 and Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, Shah said that some opposition parties are creating the impression that these bills will reduce the seats of the southern states. He clarified that this is completely wrong and the actual figures are to the contrary.
Complete mathematics explained from state data
Giving an example, Amit Shah said that currently there are 28 Lok Sabha seats in Karnataka, which will increase to 42 after delimitation. Similarly, Andhra Pradesh seats will increase from 25 to 38 and Telangana seats will increase from 17 to 26. For Tamil Nadu, he said that the existing 39 seats will increase to 59, which will further strengthen the state’s representation. Kerala seats will also increase to 30. According to Shah, the total representation of the southern states will increase from 129 to 195 seats.
Total representation will also increase
Amit Shah said that at present there are 129 Lok Sabha members from the southern states and their representation is 23.76 percent, which after 50 percent increase will become 195 seats and 23.97 percent i.e. 24 percent. Amit Shah further said that therefore representation is not decreasing, it is increasing.
Clarification on questions raised on Delimitation Commission
On Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi’s fear of possible bias in the Delimitation Commission, Shah said that the government has not made any changes in the law. He said that the same provisions that were already in place have been implemented. He also took a dig at the opposition and said that if any kind of irregularities had happened earlier, the present government would not have done so. Overall, the government has tried to convey that the purpose of delimitation is to remove regional imbalance and not to reduce the representation of any state.
