On Police Commemoration Day, October 21, 2024, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, paid homage to the martyrs at the National Police Memorial in New Delhi. The event was attended by Shri Bandi Sanjay Kumar, Minister of State for Home Affairs, Union Home Secretary Shri Govind Mohan, Director of the Intelligence Bureau Shri Tapan Kumar Deka, senior officers of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), and other dignitaries.
Tribute to Fallen Heroes
In his address, Shri Amit Shah highlighted the unwavering commitment of police personnel who safeguard India from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and from Kutch to Kibithu. He emphasized their constant vigilance, whether in extreme heat, cold, festivals, or disasters, ensuring the nation’s safety. He noted that the central structure at the National Police Memorial symbolizes the patriotism and supreme sacrifice of these brave soldiers.
Amit Shah reminded the gathering that on this day in 1959, 10 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel bravely faced the Chinese army and laid down their lives. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for establishing the National Police Memorial in Delhi to honor their sacrifice, which stands as an inspiration for future generations and a reminder of the contributions of the 36,468 police personnel who have sacrificed their lives for the nation. He mentioned that, in the last year alone, 216 police personnel lost their lives while serving the country.
Commitment to the Nation’s Security
Amit Shah acknowledged the tradition of supreme sacrifice by the police forces for the nation’s security. He spoke of the efforts of brave soldiers who protect India from the treacherous peaks of the Himalayas to the deserts of Kutch and Barmer, ensuring the country’s peace. He also praised the role of the security forces in establishing peace in Jammu & Kashmir, Northeast India, and areas affected by Left-wing extremism, thanks to their dedication and efficiency.
However, Shri Shah cautioned that the fight against new and emerging threats is ongoing. He pointed out challenges like drone threats, narcotics trade, cybercrime, AI-driven unrest, terrorism, illegal weapon smuggling, and religious conspiracies. He reassured the nation that no matter how significant these challenges may be, the courage and determination of the security forces will always prevail.
Building a Developed India by 2047
Amit Shah stated that police personnel across India are dedicated to achieving Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of building a fully developed India by 2047. He mentioned the implementation of three new criminal laws passed by the Parliament, which aim to modernize the country’s justice system. According to Amit Shah, once fully implemented, these laws will ensure that justice is served within three years, even up to the Supreme Court level, for any crime registered across the country.
Welfare Schemes for Police Personnel
The Union Home Minister also discussed various welfare schemes introduced by the Modi government for police personnel. He mentioned the success of the Ayushman CAPF scheme, which has distributed over 41 lakh health cards and settled 13 lakh claims worth Rs. 1,422 crore. The scheme ensures healthcare for the jawans and their families anywhere in India. Additionally, the government has approved the construction of 13,000 houses and 113 barracks, with 11,276 houses and 111 barracks already completed by March 2024. Through the CAPF e-Awas web portal, vacant houses are being efficiently allocated.
The Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme has greatly benefitted the children of police personnel, and 26 MBBS and 3 BDS seats have been reserved for CAPF dependents. Shri Shah also highlighted the government’s efforts to increase lump-sum ex-gratia compensation for the families of martyrs, providing much-needed relief.
Environmental and Civic Initiatives
In addition to their security responsibilities, Amit Shah noted the CAPFs’ dedication to environmental initiatives, such as planting and nurturing 5.8 crore saplings between 2019 and 2024. The Civic Action Programme has also made strides in bringing government schemes to citizens in border districts, improving lives across the country.
