World’s top player Anders Antonsen refuses to participate in India Open due to pollution

Anders Antonsen withdraws from India Open citing hazardous Delhi air quality.

BWF fined the player five thousand US dollars.

Anders Antonsen News: World number two Anders Antonsen of Denmark on Wednesday said he has decided not to participate in the India Open Super 750 badminton tournament for the third consecutive year due to extreme pollution in Delhi. Antonsson had decided to pull out of the India Open last week, but at that time he did not give the reason for it. However, on Wednesday he shared the reason for his decision on Instagram and blamed the dangerous level of pollution in Delhi.

“Many people want to know why I withdrew from the India Open for the third year in a row. Currently, pollution levels in Delhi are very high, so I don’t think it is a suitable place to hold a badminton tournament,” Antonsson wrote on Instagram. The 28-year-old Danish player, however, expressed hope that the conditions at the BWF Badminton World Championships to be held at the same venue in August will be better than in January.

Antonsson, who has won four medals including one silver and three bronze medals in the World Championships, said, “Hopefully the situation will be better when the World Championships are held in Delhi in the summer.” Due to his withdrawal from the competition, the global governing body, Badminton World Federation (BWF) has imposed a fine of five thousand US dollars on him. Antonsson last competed at the India Open in 2023, where he lost in the second round. He also shared a screenshot on Instagram, showing Delhi’s AQI level at 348.
