‘White Poison’ in Andhra Pradesh havoc, 16 died due to drinking adulterated milk; Ethylene glycol destroyed many families

Andhra Pradesh Milk Adulteration Tragedy: The tragedy arising out of consumption of adulterated milk in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh has so far claimed 16 innocent lives. There is mourning in areas like Lalacheruvu, Chaudeswarnagar and Swarupnagar. According to the report, milk supplied from a local dairy unit has been confirmed to be laced with a deadly chemical called Ethylene Glycol, which directly caused kidney failure of the drinkers.

The tragedy began on February 22, when milk was delivered to around 100 families from a dairy unit in Narasapuram village. Within hours of drinking milk, dozens of people, including children and elderly people, started vomiting and stopped urinating. Investigation found that the blood urea and serum creatinine levels of the patients had increased to dangerous limits, due to which they had to be immediately put on dialysis and ventilator support.

Shocking revelation in investigation

What came to light in the initial investigation by the Health Department and Food Safety officials is shocking. Ethylene glycol was added to the milk, which is commonly used in anti-freeze of vehicles. This substance acts like a deadly poison for human organs, especially the kidneys. Currently, 3 patients are still fighting the battle between life and death in the ICU.

Suspicious milk vendor arrested

Considering the seriousness of the incident, the administration has taken steps on war footing. The police have arrested the main suspect, the milk vendor. Samples of milk, curd, ghee and water from the dairy unit have been sent to the lab. Animal feed is also being examined closely. Apart from this, a team of senior doctors from Hyderabad is monitoring the treatment and door-to-door survey has been conducted in the affected areas. Police have registered a case under serious sections of unnatural deaths and food adulteration.
