Key Points:
After another Ashes defeat in Australia, Andrew Strauss said that the problems of English cricket are deep. According to him, the situation will not improve just by changing the captain or coach. Strauss stressed on major changes and long-term planning in the domestic cricket system.
Delhi: After another disappointing Ashes tour in Australia, former England captain Andrew Strauss has given a big statement. He said that England cricket will have to think beyond just changing the coach or captain. According to Strauss, the repeated failures are not due to any one person but are a problem of the system. Many people are demanding the removal of head coach Brendon McCullum. At the same time, questions are also being raised on captain Ben Stokes. But, Strauss believes that these changes will not improve England’s condition in Australia.
Andrew Strauss talks about McCullum-Stokes
Strauss reminded that under his captaincy in 2010-11, England won the Ashes in Australia. He said that the conditions there are very difficult. The figures also show the same. England have lost 16 of their last 18 Test matches in Australia and played only two draws.
According to him, this problem has been going on for many years. After every visit, hasty decisions are taken, but there is no real change. Strauss said he had submitted a review to the ECB after the 2021 22 4 0 defeat. In this, suggestions like changing the structure of domestic cricket and reducing the number of matches were given.
Strauss blamed domestic cricket
However, these suggestions were not accepted by the county teams. For this reason the long term plan could not move forward. Strauss says that unless attention is paid to preparing good players in domestic cricket, the results will not change.
In his post written on LinkedIn, Strauss said that every time the England team goes to Australia with high hopes, it falls apart within a few days. He clearly said that only the coach or the captain are not responsible for the continuous defeats since 1986-87. Australia’s system is stronger.
Now that the series is out of hand, the England team will try to save its honor in the Boxing Day Test to be held in Melbourne on 26 December. Both Stokes and McCullum have made it clear that they are not going to step down from their positions and are committed to taking the team out of this difficult period.
