Anil Ambani makes BIG move, Reliance Power plans Rs 10,000 crore project in…, the project is…
Reliance NU Suntech Pvt, a subsidiary of Anil Ambani-led Reliance Power, has secured the contract to build a 930 MW solar power plant and 1860 MWh battery storage capacity facility in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh.
In a big move which could revive the fortunes of his indebted businesses, Reliance Group chairman Anil Ambani– the younger brother of Asia’s richest man, Mukesh Ambani, is planning to build a Rs 10,000 solar power project in Andhra Pradesh. According to details, Reliance NU Suntech Pvt, a subsidiary of Anil Ambani-led Reliance Power, has secured the contract to build a 930 MW solar power plant and 1860 MWh battery storage capacity facility in Kurnool district of the southern state, Economic Times (ET) reported.
The project will be the largest solar and battery storage project at a single location in Asia, and would generate around 6,000 jobs, the report said, citing a Reliance Power spokesperson, adding that the Anil Ambani-led company is set to invest Rs 10,000 crore in the project.
As per the report, Reliance Power also plans to build an integrated solar manufacturing facility in Andhra Pradesh with an investment of Rs 6,500 crore, and is mulling to set up the project near the Rambili industrial area in Anakapalli district.
Notably, this would be Reliance Power’s second attempt to build a large-scale power project in Andhra Pradesh after the Anil Ambani-led company had failed to set up 2,400 MW gas-based thermal power plant in Samalkot district in 2010-11, which drowned the firm in a giant Rs 2,500 crore debt from the Export-Import Bank of the United States.
Anil Ambani’s Samalkot project was unable to take off because of the lack of natural gas resources in the country, in addition to expenditure incurred from having to export power equipment from the site to Bangladesh for another project. Samarlakota Power Limited, a subsidiary of Reliance Power which was working on the project, finally settled its debts in December 2024.
In 2024, Reliance Power spent a major portion of the year in settling its debts, and making its subsidiaries debt-free. The company had announced in September 2024 that it had completely settled a Rs 3,872 crore guarantee for Vidarbha Industries Power (VIPL), resulting in it being free of all corporate guarantees, undertakings, and obligations.
