Mukesh Ambani became a hurdle in the way of Elon Musk, made this demand to the government on Starlink
New Delhi: Reliance Industries (RIL) Chairman Mukesh Ambani has increased the troubles of Tesla owner and world's richest man Elon Musk. In fact, Ambani has requested the Telecom Regulatory of India (TRAI) to review the access of Musk's Starlink and Amazon's Kuiper before giving them satellite broadband spectrum. Reliance demands that spectrum should be allocated through auction so that Indian companies can also get a level playing field.
Ambani has written a letter to Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and telecom regulator TRAI requesting their intervention in this matter. According to Reuters report, Ambani has objected to the administrative method of spectrum allocation. Ambani and Airtel owner Sunil Mittal believe that spectrum should be allocated through auction.
what did reliance say
In a letter to Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Reliance said it moves about 15 billion gigabytes of data in India every month after spending about $23 billion on spectrum auctions over the past few years, but Starlink moves about 18 billion gigabytes. Will target only those customers with potential. Experts say the auction means higher initial investment, which may deter foreign players from favoring Reliance.
On the other hand, Starlink CEO Elon Musk opposes the auction. There is currently no provision for individual or home users in satellite broadband spectrum.
Government said- it will not be free
Reliance says that the auction process will give domestic telecom companies an opportunity to compete with international companies. This will be in the interest of the industry. Reliance has said that there is an atmosphere of uncertainty right now. Despite being given priority in spectrum allocation, no domestic company will get the opportunity to set up its own geo-satellite stations.
The central government has made it clear that the allocation of satellite broadband spectrum will be done administratively and there will be no auction. However, the government has also said that it will not be free. This development has come to light at a time when Musk's status has increased after Donald Trump's victory in the US Presidential elections. He has been entrusted with the responsibility of Department of Government Efficiency i.e. DODGE. Elon Musk strongly supported Donald Trump in the election campaign.
