Aniruddhacharya troubled by viral content, court said

Tezzbuzz Desk – Hearing was held in Delhi High Court on Monday on the petition filed by storyteller Aniruddhacharya demanding removal of viral videos and objectionable material on social media. During this time, while the court made strong comments, it also provided interim relief to Aniruddhacharya.

Court raised questions on jurisdiction

During the hearing, Justice Tushar Rao Gedela asked the petitioner’s lawyer that when Aniruddhacharya lives in Vrindavan, why did he approach the Delhi High Court. The court also said that when various High Courts and District Courts exist across the country, what is the point in bringing this case specifically in Delhi.

‘One should be above criticism’

The court, in oral remarks, said that being a religious leader he should be above criticism and praise. Justice Gedela said that if a person propagates an ideology, then disagreement is also natural and every person has the right to protest.

The lawyer argued that the image would be tarnished.

The lawyer appearing for Aniruddhacharya argued that the viral videos and clips were damaging his image and could have a negative impact on his followers. On this the court said that if the faith of a follower wavers due to such reasons, it shows the weakness of that person’s faith.

Issue of deepfake raised

During the hearing, it was also said on behalf of the petitioner that some videos have been made through deepfake technology, in which he is being shown saying things which he never said.

Considering the seriousness of the matter, the High Court has provided interim protection to Aniruddhacharya’s ‘personality rights’. Also, the court directed the concerned platforms to remove the videos and links included in the complaint.
